1x Undertaker's receipt from "Dr. to R. McKenzie, Furnishing Undertaken, Embalmer, etc." addressed to James Farr Saunders (b. 1888) for the coffin of "William Richard Saunders aged 13 months … £11.10.6." 1 May 1923.

The coffin receipt is for William Richard Saunders (b. 1922), the second child of Elizabeth Jane Taylor Saunders (nee Elliott, b. 1894) and James Farr Saunders (b. 1888). In her oral history, Elizabeth Euphemia Saunders (b. 1926) remembers that Elizabeth Jane’s mother had said that she wasn't going to raise the baby because he had the "look of heaven in his eyes". After the baby died, the cause of death was unknown until his body broke out into the measles rash 24 hours after death. Understandably, after losing a baby in an epidemic, Elizabeth Jane developed a lifelong obsession with hygiene. When the baby died, Elizabeth Jane was 5 months pregnant with her daughter Lavinia Harriet Saunders (b. 1923). In the four years after the baby's death, the couple had three children. James Farr Saunders was extremely affected by the death of his son, and became quite distraught on every anniversary of his death. This grief may have been compounded by the fact that the baby was named after James' deceased father who died tragically when James was eight years old.

James’ grief over the loss of his son become more pronounced as he aged. Every year he would retract on this anniversary and spend the day alone, weeping and praying. [Note: Reduced payments from May 1929 to October 1935 - some months only the insurance premium is paid.]

The passbooks end in 1964, when the mortgage was paid off. I can vaguely recall a party taking place at this time, to celebrate the milestone, though in 1964 I was too young to understand why the party in the kitchen was happening. Notably, there are a few months when only the insurance premium is paid, not the mortgage. Perhaps this coincides with waterside strikes, and could be cross-referenced with other documentation in the archive. The first listed receipt ("reopened the grave of J J Baird", 1879) can be attributed to the burial of John James Baird (b. 1879 and d. 1879).

The second receipt refers to Richard Edward Baird’s (b. 1877) son, John David Edward Baird (b. 1899) who died when he was one year old.

The third receipt is for the burial of William Richard Saunders (b.1922) the child referred to in S00000004.

This decision would have been so that the estate went to the daughter with the four children, paying off the mortgage to the house that he had lived in. This birthday postcard was sent from Elizabeth Jane to James Farr well before they were married. The couple met when Elizabeth Jane was 16 and James Farr was 22. Noting the age gap, Elizabeth Jane's father John Frederick Elliott (b. 1855) stipulated that James would have to wait until his daughter was 21 before they were married. The letter reads: "Podger is dead, and also Henry Baker." Here, Podger is taken to refer to William Podger, Ann's husband. Henry Baker is the husband of Lavinia Elliott (b.1836). The letter dated 1886 is perhaps from Susan Pepperell (nee Elliott) to John Frederick Elliott, mentioning her daughter Lucy (Kelland nee Pepperell). Essentially, these are letters to John Frederick Elliott while he lived in Australia from his aunts back in England, sending news from home. The receipts directly relate to the Building Plan for the kitchen extension (held by Museums Victoria). Brian Hobson was one of Jim's best friends, and was setting himself up as a plumber around the time that Jim was starting his carpentry trade. The building work of the extension was carried out by Jim himself. The receipts show a three-year gap between the purchase of bricks and plumbing work. Jim would have been working full-time elsewhere at the same time as building the extension, putting his personal project at a lower priority than continuing employment and drawing in an income, hence the slow progress. The final receipt from "Twenty-Size" is the catering receipt for the wedding of Jim and Margaret Dawn Saunders (nee Witton, b. 1931) on the 1st October 1955. The receipt - for a sit down lunch at the family home - caters for 40 people. On recalling the reception, Margaret wildly overestimated the number of guests. This grief booklet was published in 1973. Elizabeth Jane Taylor Saunders (nee Elliott, b. 1894) died in 1971, and James Farr Saunders (b. 1888) in 1974, so Aunty Bet (Elizabeth Euphemia, b. 1926) would have acquired this book to help her through the loss of her parents.

Aunty Bet's grief for her mother was profound and she channelled this into the devoted care of her ailing father.

After Elizabeth Jane died, between 1971 and 1974, Margaret (Margaret Dawn Saunders nee Witton, b. 1931) would drop her children at high school everyday and afterwards go to the house in Port Melbourne. She would find things to do to spend the day with her father-in-law, leaving as he had a nap in the afternoon, in time to pick her children up from school. At about the time he was waking up, Aunty Bet would return home from work. This invitation is addressed to Mr and Mrs J Saunders (7 Murphy St). This is James Farr Saunders (‘Jim’, b. 1927) and Margaret Dawn Saunders (nee Witton, b. 1931). Jim had a lifelong association with the YMCA. As a builder, he donated a lot of time to the YMCA for building facilities at Camp Manyung, Mt Eliza. This included the chapel and toilet block, and work on bunk houses. Jim would often go away on weekends to work on such tasks, bringing the family with him. Jen (Jennifer Margaret Saunders, b. 1958) remembers these trips as a large part of her childhood. While the invitation is addressed to James and Margaret, Margaret recalls that they wouldn't have accepted the invitation - they never went anywhere if the children weren't included. Instead, she suggests that Aunty Bet (Elizabeth Euphemia, b. 1926) and Elizabeth Jane Taylor Saunders (nee Elliott, b. 1894) may have gone in their place. Margaret remembers the two women went to many garden parties at government house. The invitation was at least taken to the Port Melbourne house to show off. Also included is a newspaper extract and a get well card. Billy Graham had a call in show on the radio. Elizabeth Euphemia (b. 1926) was a fan, and attended his live 'Crusades' in Melbourne, at large venues such as the MCG. James Farr (b. 1927) used to join her, sometimes, and Margaret (Margaret Dawn Saunders nee Witton, b. 1931) remembers attending one once with James.

St James' Old Cathedral is a significant church to the family. James Farr Saunders was christened there and James and Margaret were married there. Margaret recalls that many others would have been christened there, too. Dating from 1977-1989, this is the period when Aunty Bet (Elizabeth Euphemia Saunders, b.1926) lived alone. Aunty Bet would always gift bibles as 21st birthday gifts to her nieces and nephews. This particular receipt dates to David Saunders' (b. 1957) 21st birthday. Also included are the wedding invitation, the receipt for the wedding gift, and a thank you note all relating to David Saunders' wedding. The receipt for towels and washers would have been a gift for Linda's 21st (Linda was David Saunders’ fiancé at the time). The photocopies of school enrolment show that 'Betty E' was enrolled by her mother, Elizabeth Jane Taylor Saunders (nee Elliott, b. 1894) on the 28th of January 1930. 1977 was three years after James Farr Saunders (b. 1888) passed away. Aunty Bet (Elizabeth Euphemia, b. 1926) found it difficult to cope with the compound of living alone and processing the grief of recently losing both of her parents. Aunty Bet was 51 and living alone for the first time. She was struggling with all aspects of running a house. All her life, Aunty Bet had been big on taking courses to learn different skills. She really wanted to try and relax through yoga, hence taking the course. 1979 was after she had a breakdown, and the notebook dated this year is full of notes on how to relieve tension. Also included are newspaper extracts including 'Saturday Reflection', about the benefits of relaxing. The handwritten notes here recount first hand how difficult she found caring for the home by herself, how it was beyond her. Aunty Bet would have felt a great deal of responsibility about keeping the house in order. In her father's will, it was stipulated that she could stay in the house if she kept it in order. Her brother Jack (John Frederick Elliott Saunders, b. 1916) thought that she should have sold the house and distributed the funds. In line with this, he often reminded Aunty Bet of her commitment, which increased her tenacity. This is reflected in her communications trying to find a painter to do repairs on the house - she wouldn't have settled for anyone less than the best in the business. Furthermore, these notes on scraps and re-used bits of paper are her practice letters. Aunty Bet left school at 13 and was always self-conscious about her ability to write. This is the passbook for the bank account that was opened in the joint names of Lavinia Harriet (b. 1891) and Elizabeth Jane, as referred to in a previous letter from Lavinia. The family would drop by the Port Melbourne house every Sunday to take in firewood.

On the day preceding the death of Lavinia Harriet it was pouring with rain so only James Farr (b. 1927) jumped out while the rest of the family stayed in the car. This little cloth bag (with initials MS for Margaret Saunders) is an example of the kind of item that may have been made during sewing class at school to practice stitching. It may have been used to carry a slate or reader to school in.

66 Iffla Street was the family home of Euphemia Saunders (nee McLarty, b. 1856) and William Saunders (b. 1852). It was left in their will to Catherine Saunders and Nellie McLarty (b. 1912). Nellie McLarty was the niece of Euphemia Saunders. As a child, Nelly came from Perth with her sister to be raised by their aunt when their mother died. Catherine died in 1955 at Iffla Street. The safety deposit box opened in May 1973 was established by Aunty Bet (Elizabeth Euphemia Saunders, b. 1926) to house the title to the house at Williamstown Road. This document stayed in the safety deposit box until Aunty Bet moved into care in 2015, at which point David Saunders (b. 1957) went to retrieve it and close the box. This bundle of papers documents Aunty Bet's various applications and correspondences regarding getting a job as a travelling dental assistant. This includes handwritten drafts, letters from the Health Department with advice on how to proceed, and finally applying for permanency. The first document is dated the 14th of November 1949 (Aunty Bet would have been 23 years old). In 1967, Aunty Bet came off the road and was transferred to North Fitzroy School Dental Clinic. This newspaper is dated the 1st of April 1882. It includes a marriage notice for John Frederick Elliott ('Grandpa Elliott', b. 1855) and Lavinia Harriet Elliott (nee Taylor, b. 1852) - on the front page, top left hand corner, second listing in marriages Elliott-Baird. This newspaper was kept by Elizabeth Jane Taylor Saunders (nee Elliott, b. 1894) as it was her parent's wedding. The Collins Diary 1959 shows Aunty Bet’s life on the road. Warragul in February. A work diary. Shows her home with tonsillitis and records accommodation and board paid, sick days. She met the Henshaws by boarding with them.

That’s Lavinia Harriet’s death certificate. We visited on the Sunday and she died overnight. It was sudden. She moved to Sydney when she was 42. She loved travelling and the life in Sydney, she lived in Bondi in the heart of everything.

The letter dated 16/2/70 is written to the director of Child Health Dental. It’s a thank you note for an Italian crash course. In the 1960s and 1970s there were large waves of Italian speaking migrants. The nurses at Fitzroy had trouble communicating so Aunty Bet did courses in Italian. She started going to Melbourne Uni. When her boss caught wind of it, he paid for the courses and gave her days off. Euphemia Saunders (nee McLarty, b. 1856) was buried at the Melbourne Cemetery. The title for 66 Iffla Street was with "William Richard Saunders - Labourer. 3/10/1892". William Richard (b. 1852) purchased 66 Iffla St South Melbourne and then four years later (at age 44), he died at work of a work related injury (stone mason), leaving Euphemia with seven children to raise.

Aunty Bet (Elizabeth Euphemia, b. 1926) told me that William Richard had been brought out from Scotland to work on the building of Princes Bridge. During his work, there was a collapse of stone on the bridge and he died after having been trapped in the water and catching pneumonia.

Nellie McLarty (b. 1912) died on the 26th December 1998. The Iffla Street house was then sold. Nellie was part of the Australian women's cricket team. She played in the first women’s test match against England in 1934 and toured to England with the team in 1937. A right-arm medium-fast bowler, she claimed 11 wickets in international cricket.

The receipt for fur. The address for the craftsman is 144 Ebley St, Bondi Junction. Lily (Lavinia Harriet, b. 1891) loved fur. We have memories of a fur cape - now in the possession of Jen (Jennifer Margaret Saunders, b. 1958) who believes it was worn by Aunty Bet to David Saunders’ (b. 1957) wedding. Jen has a photograph of this, too, here in the archive.

The bundle of newspapers. Elizabeth O'Hara lived down the road, had a daughter Ellie O'Hara who made Aunty Bet's debutante dress. Ellie is described by Aunty Bet in the oral history interviews. Mrs O'Hara did everything with Elizabeth Jane Taylor Saunders (nee Elliott, b. 1894). Everyone only ever called her Mrs O'Hara.

Of relevance in the newspapers are (from the Herald 7 December 1974) an article about Nellie McLarty (b. 1912) and women's cricket: "another champion from this era, captained Victoria 1936, and was in the first Australian team to visit England 1937, distinguished herself as a bowler during the tour, and great fielder".

On the back of a cereal box are transcribed bible passages.

Looking at Aunty Lily’s coming of age celebration reminds me. I packed Aunty Lily’s possessions into a case and brought it to the house in Port Melbourne. The telegram here is saying that her father (John Frederick Elliott, b. 1855) had died. It was sent from Jack (John Frederick Saunders, b. 1916).

The 1943 card from the Ear and Eye Hospital is James Farr Saunders’ (b. 1927) follow up appointments after losing his eye. The family thought well of Doctor Esme Anderson.

Eric Henshaw was a farmer in Seymour. Aunty Bet (Elizabeth Euphemia Saunders, b. 1926) met him through her touring dental work. She boarded at the Henshaw house. He became a very close family friend, and became known as 'Uncle Eric'. Here, the letter is addressed to Ma and Pa, which demonstrates how close this relationship was. He was a jolly man. There was a big family lunch in the reception rooms, organised by Margaret (Margaret Dawn Saunders nee Witton, b. 1931). Jen (Jennifer Margaret Saunders, b. 1958) and her siblings were seated at the fancy main table with their Grandma and Grandpa. The card that the guests signed offers an interesting record of the family’s circle of friends. These are all the close friends and family who were invited to the celebration and signed the card. There are also telegrams and cards in this folder. It would be possible to pull together a social net from all the names mentioned here.

When Jen unpacked her grandpa's suit from the wardrobe, his place marker from the 50th wedding anniversary was still in his suit pocket. The grandparents celebrated each wedding anniversary. Each one was a big deal. The crystal cabinet in their bedroom was full of all their wedding anniversary presents (glass, silver, crystal, china, etc.).

There is a photograph here of Jim (James Farr Saunders, b. 1927) and Margaret's children next to Grandma and Grandpa at the main table. And also Aunty Lily (Lavinia Harriet Elliott, b. 1891).

Grandpa only ever wore his false teeth for weddings and funerals. He couldn't eat with them in, so took them out and put them in his pocket. It either came from Aunty Dorothy (Dorothy May Leheny Saunders), that’s Uncle Jack’s (John Frederick Elliott Saunders, b. 1916) wife, the eldest child’s wife, or it came from Aunty Lily (Lavinia Harriet Elliott, b. 1891) in Sydney. "These were all in my aunt’s glory box. For when she moved into her home with her husband, she would have these immaculate, exquisite aprons. She also had a beautiful collection of dressing gowns for the occasion. But she never married, the glory box wasn’t opened, not until 2015 when I came to pack up the house.

Some of these aprons are the everyday ones my grandmother (Elizabeth Jane) lived in, and just about all of them, I will have a photograph of her wearing. She always had an apron on, unless there was a wedding or some other special occasion. There’s many photos of her wearing aprons. In all the photos, she’s either very well dressed to go out or she’s wearing an apron. Many of these would have been made on the treadle, upstairs in the front room.

The story goes that her treadle sewing machine used to be downstairs in the original kitchen near the window that looked out to the backyard so she could be supervising all children activity, cooking and be on the machine at the same time. Aunty Bet would tell me stories about how she’d go to school, rush home at lunch time for a fitting and then go back to school again. She was at Nott Street Primary, not far away. 1x Bundle of repurposed old clothing sewn by Elizabeth Jane Taylor Saunders (nee Elliott, b.1894) and used to bag the garden fruit trees c.1940s onwards.

"Sleeves for the branches. Pyjama legs. You’d peg right up to the point where the branch meets the trunk, to protect against wind and rain. Then you’d take the bags off and the fruit would be perfect. I have many photos of the tree covered in these. Repurposing. Enough light got through, no sun damage, bugs or birds couldn’t get through the bags in the wind. Aunty Bet (Elizabeth Euphemia Saunders, b. 1926) would wash and mend them at the end of every season, ready to use them again. These were all clothes that would’ve been worn until they nearly fell apart and then they got used for this.

Everything was repurposed in this house. Toward the end of Aunty Bet's life, she would be sitting on a chair and we’d have a trolley with all the bags and all the pegs and we’d look at the branches. Depending on the size of the different branches she’d tell me ‘that one goes on that branch, this one goes on this branch’ and I had to follow her instructions, I’d climb the tree and put them on when she could no longer climb the trees. She trained me.

These pieces are so familiar to me. I’ve personally pegged many of these onto the trees myself 20 times over. There was an apricot tree and a plum tree.

You look at some of these pieces and you see how many times they were mended before they got turned into these tree sleeves. They’ve had a journey. Sets of pyjamas, old sheets, old shirts. Blanket 1: Uncle Jack's wedding blanket
A granny-style crocheted blanket with a patchwork, flower garden design using small squares and small stitches. Black borders. Made from wool. Double bed size.

"This blanket was made by Great Aunt Lily, early 1940s, for my Uncle Jack’s (John Frederick Elliott Saunders, b. 1916) wedding in 1944. Great Aunt Lily crocheted a double bed sized blanket with the black wool borders each time one of the children got married. We’ll come to one that’s grey rather than black and that was made for my Aunty Bet (Elizabeth Euphemia Saunders, b. 1926. See Blanket 2). That one’s a single bed size because she never married.

This one here was found in the flat at the back of the house at 392 Williamstown Road, in a bundle of things that had come from my Uncle Jack’s when they packed up his garage. I love that it is so well worn. It was used and used and used and used. In the family that it would have come from, there were three sons raised. In its day, when it was in the family home it would have been extremely well used by Uncle Jack, his wife Dorothy (Dorothy May Saunders nee Leheny) and their three sons. It wasn’t just decorative. All that use and it still has its shape. The family would have treated it well and washed it carefully I’d imagine. It also might be relevant to say that I make crocheted blankets today. Blanket 2: The single blanket
A granny-style crocheted blanket with a patchwork, flower garden design using small squares and small stitches. Grey borders. Made from wool. Single bed size.

"This one would have been made in the 1950s. Great Aunt Lily dropped into a pastel pallet later in life. Aunty Bet used this blanket right up until she moved into aged care. I wanted to take it into the facility for her but she said ‘no, that stays at home. Home is home.’ It was too fragile anyway. She made the right decision. I gave her one of mine instead, a smaller one that went with her to the aged care place.

This blanket used to be rolled up underneath Aunty Bet’s feet at the bottom of her bed, later in life, to take pressure off her heels, and she spent weeks mending it and washing it to get it to this state before she would let me photograph it for my website (see: http://toholdblankets.blogspot.com/2012/10/then-now.html)

Great Aunt Lily gave each woman she gifted a blanket to a bag of wool, scraps, for mending. If this blanket was staying with me and not going into the archive, I’d pull out the balls of wool Aunty left in my care and I’d go over it. Often when I wash a blanket, afterwards I spend a couple of hours checking every square, checking every end, darning. We have a photograph of this blanket on Aunty Bet’s bed. Blanket 3: The learning blanket
A crocheted blanket with a colourful, striped design. Made from wool. Long, irregular size.

"I can’t wait to tell you about this. Shall I tell you what this is? So, Great Aunt Lily used to come down to stay with her nieces at 392 Williamstown Road and at some point in their lives she taught them to crochet and this is the equivalent of a child’s first knitted scarf. It’s the beginner test drive and yet, I believe, it was used and used and used and used. The evidence you see of that here is in all of the darning.

If we look at it closely you will see the irregularity in the tension of the crochet. This was one of my favourite objects as I unpacked the house. I can see that this here would have been where Aunty Bet would’ve learned to crochet and this would’ve been where Aunty Lily (Lavinia Harriet Saunders, b. 1923) would have learned to crochet. Different personalities and I can see it in their crochet work. By the time Lily, my aunt, got to this point in the blanket she started to lose interest, and here Aunty Bet, the youngest sister, she took over. Wouldn’t surprise me if my Dad (James Farr Saunders, b. 1927) had a bit of a go on here as well. The learning blanket. I know that’s what this is because I was once the girl child learning from these women. I’m pretty sure it was different children doing this otherwise you can’t explain it. Beautiful colours. Sometime in the 1940s this would be from. Definitely.

And look at the mends. It’s someone learning to darn. I’d like to tell you, in the last few weeks of my aunt’s life, I got on speaker phone with Aunty Bet and Aunty Lily (b. 1923), and they were talking to each other in the most tender way. Aunty Lily said to Aunty Bet ‘I can’t stand the telly, Bet. There’s nothing to watch on the telly.
